Gift appreciated securities

Supporters can use appreciated securities to fund a charitable trust or gift annuity, which can provide you, your spouse, or other beneficiaries annual income for life. You can learn more about life income gifts here.

You can also use stocks, bonds, and mutual funds that have appreciated in value to support our shared vision. You may receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock (up to a maximum of 30% of your adjusted gross income) and avoid paying the capital gains tax on any increase in the value of the stock.

Recommend a grant from your donor-advised fund

Supporters like you who have a donor-advised fund (DAF) are charitable-minded and forward-thinking. One way to ensure these funds make a difference for generations to come is to designate an account’s residual funds to charity. Learn more about designating DAF residuals to Mass General Brigham.

You can also use your DAF to make a one-time gift, or to create a recurring monthly or quarterly gift for even more impact.

Make a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA

You can transfer funds from your IRA directly to Mass General Brigham. This is an effective way to make an immediate impact and ensure our work providing world-class care to all our patients continues. Here’s how it works:

  • You must be 70½ or older.
  • An individual may transfer up to $111,000 per year, and a married couple may give up to $222,000 to all organizations.
  • Your gift must be transferred directly from the IRA account to Mass General Brigham.
  • Your gift is a transfer of funds from your IRA to Mass General Brigham so it does not count as income for the year.
  • If you are 73 and older, the transfer of funds counts towards your annual Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA.

Additionally, many supporters save funds in a 401 (k) or IRA over their lifetimes and then realize they no longer need those funds as much as they once thought. Often, there may be residual funds in an account that supporters can designate to Mass General Brigham to make an impact for future generations.
